Die Geschichte der Familie Mazzei ist nicht nur eng an die des Weinbaus und der Weinerzeugung in der Toskana, sondern auch an das ganze politische und kulturelle Leben der Region gebunden. Die ersten Unterlagen, die die Mazzei betreffen – aus dem Weingebiet von Carmignano stammend – gehen auf den Beginn des 11. Jahrhunderts zurück.
Aus dieser Zeit stammt das älteste Familienwappen, das drei Holzhämmer, typische Werkzeuge der Kunst der Böttcher- undFassdaubenmeister, wiedergibt. Im 14. Jahrhundert erscheinen dagegen die drei Eisenkeulen, die heute noch darauf dargestellt sind. Seit ihren Ursprüngen üben die Mazzei die Winzertätigkeit aus und nehmen aktiv am Handels- und Berufsleben von Florenz teil. Dabei gelingt es ihnen, bedeutende Regierungsämter innezuhaben. Today, after almost six centuries, the Mazzei family – under the guidance of Lapo, who oversees the property with the help of his sons, Filippo and Francesco, - still devotes itself to winemaking, with a constant commitment, an eye towards innovation and an abiding respect for the land. To keep alive the historical and traditional family values, adapting them to the demands of today’s marketplace while examining the opportunities offered by advanced technological applications: this is the objective towards which the Mazzei family are guiding the company. This is the thinking behind several important strategic moves, such as the decision to adopt the most advanced systems of environmental protection (starting with generating our own energy), or, in another sector, the creation of a true winemaking Group, through the acquisition of vineyards in the two areas widely perceived as the most promising in Italy: Maremma and southeastern Sicily.
