La Fuga 2018
NAME: Contessa Entellina Doc Chardonnay Sicilia
PRODUCTION AREA: south-western Sicily, Tenuta di Contessa.
LAND AND CLIMATE: altitude from 200 to 600 m s.l.m; hilly orography; clay loam soils with sub-alkaline reaction (pH from 7.5 to 7.9) rich in nutrients (potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc) and total limestone from 20 to 35%). Mild winters; dry and windy summers with strong temperature changes between day and night.
VINEYARD: counter-espalier farming with spurred cordon pruning, leaving 6 to 10 buds per plant. Density of 4,500 - 6,000 plants / hectare, with yields of about 70-80 quintals / ha.
VINTAGE: in Contessa Entellina, after two rainy years, in 2018 there were 743 mm of rain, a figure that is above the average * (667 mm) of this territory. Most of the rainfall was distributed in the spring; only in some plots there have been intense rains in the summer. The integrated management of agronomic practices, from pruning to thinning out to the choice of different harvest moments, inspired by an eco-sustainable viticulture, has allowed us to have healthy and well-ripened grapes. * (average rainfall calculated from the 2003 vintage and read by SIAS, Sicilian Agrometeorological Service)
HARVEST: the Chardonnay La Fuga night harvest ended in the first ten days of August, and gave birth to a fresh and fragrant expression of La Fuga.
VINIFICATION: the fermentation is carried out in steel at a temperature of 15-16 ° C. The wine is then aged in the vat on the Feccino Nobile for five months and at least three months in the bottle before being sold.
ALCOHOL AND ANALYTICAL DATA: alcohol. 12.64% vol, total acidity 5.7 g / l., PH 3.35.
TASTING NOTES (04/19/19): with a brilliant straw yellow color, La Fuga 2018 offers a fresh bouquet with floral notes combined with hints of tropical fruit (pineapple) and golden apple. In the mouth it is sapid and fresh thanks to a pleasant acid vein.
LONGEVITY: to be enjoyed within 4-5 years.
FOOD & WINE: perfect with vegetable and seafood risottos. Also excellent with chicken with herbs, pies and fish main courses. Serve it in slender and good-sized glasses, it can be uncorked at the moment, excellent at 10-12 ° C.
DIALOGUE WITH ART: Gabriella Anca Rallo (founder of Donnafugata together with her husband Giacomo) thought she was "running away" and starting a new life, moving from letters to land. Gabriella is a woman who knows no rest, always with the wind in her hair. Gabriella invented La Fuga: a label that expresses not only movement, but sunshine and earth.
FIRST VINTAGE: this wine was born with the Contessa Entellina DOC in 1994.
