Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese Sicily DOC Planeta wineries
The Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 by Planeta takes its name from the legendary eruption of Etna in 1614 that lasted for 10 years, the longest of all time. A strongly evocative name for this Etna Cru with intense aromas and elegant structure.
Classification: Sicilia DOC
Grape variety: 100% Nerello Mascalese
Vineyards: Sciaranuova
Soil type: the soils have perfect exposure and position, black due to the lava sands, and for this reason extraordinarily rich in minerals; around woods and more recent lava flows
Altitude: 840-860 meters above sea level
Yield per hectare: 68 quintals
Training system: espalier with spurred cordon and double spurred cordon pruning system
Vine density: 5,050 plants per hectare
Harvest period: 22-23 October
Vinification: the grapes, collected in crates, are immediately refrigerated at a temperature of 10°C, then selected by hand. After crushing and destemming, they ferment at 25-26°C in steel tanks and remain on the skins for 16 to 40 days, with only manual punching down and with the concrete tanks filled just at the end of the alcoholic fermentation for a longer and finer extraction. They are then gently drawn off with the vertical press; malolactic fermentation in steel follows
Refinement: in 25 hl and 36 hl oak barrels for 12 months
Bottling period: July 2022
Total acidity: 4.95 g/l
pH: 3.62
Alcohol content: 13.5% vol
Colour: bright and transparent ruby red
Nose: the lava sands give this Nerello Mascalese the gustatory strength and the extraordinary aromas of officinal herbs incense, hibiscus and wild fennel
Palate: A bright and lyrical wine, it tells the character and refinement of the great mountain reds without filters but at latitudes close to Africa. The compact fabric tannins are elegantly extracted. The sweetness and generosity of wild berries and currants mixes with the scents of incense and beeswax, a slight, almost salty touch invites you to return to the glass
Pairings: A wine whose character can allow very bold combinations with dishes of the same character. Game, truffle dishes, rock fish also with complex sauces, cheeses and cold cuts
Aging capacity: from 7 to 10 years
