The Baglio di Pianetto winery was founded in 1997 in the Pianetto district, in a suggestive mountainous amphitheater in the municipality of Santa Cristina Gela, in the province of Palermo. Baglio di Pianetto was founded by Count Paolo Marzotto who, from an early age, during a holiday in Sicily, showed his great passion for wine and his deep love for Sicily and its mountains.
And it is precisely in an extraordinary and exceptional mountain terroir that Count Marzotto began the wine production of Baglio di Pianetto.
The Baglio di Pianetto estate extends over 106 hectares of high hills and mountains, planted with 13 varieties of vineyards, at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level, in the Pianetto and Piana degli Albanesi areas. The exposure, the wind, the altitude, the strong temperature range of 26 degrees between day and night and the clayey soils rich in minerals allow the production of wines characterized by freshness, complexity, elegance and unique aroma.
In 2002 the new, completely eco-sustainable, vertically developed cellar was inaugurated, which allows the force of gravity to be exploited by falling in order to reduce the use of pumps during the movement of musts and wines.
Since 2023, Baglio di Pianetto has been led by Count Marzotto's nephew, Grégoire Desforgers. According to Desforgers, the idea of wine cannot ignore the values of responsibility, ethics, integrity and love for the land that have always distinguished Baglio di Pianetto. Starting from social sustainability, up to agricultural and environmental sustainability, the company carries forward the idea of an ecosystem whose well-being is at heart by working every day with respect for nature, the territory and the people who live there. 26 winemakers are part of this ecosystem, the oenologists Francesco Matesi and Giuseppe Lo Iacono, the agronomist Fernando Schepis and the cellarman Gaspare Salvatore Tumminia.
The production process of Baglio di Pianetto wines combines tradition with research and avant-garde. According to the philosophy of Baglio di Pianetto, wine is born and developed first and foremost in the vineyard. The vines are worked with dedication and respect to obtain the best grapes from which to produce wines of great expressiveness, elegance and refinement. The sustainable approach that preserves the beauty and diversity of the terroir also plays an important role, encouraging the production of excellent, unique and authentic wines.
Baglio di Pianetto's wine production is made up of different lines: ViaFrancia, In Purezza, Etna.
The ViaFrancia line was born in 2014 and since 2024 it boasts the expertise and creativity of Graziana Grassini, one of the most influential personalities on the international wine scene and one of the first female winemakers in Italy. The line includes ViaFrancia Bianco, ViaFrancia Rosso and ViaFrancia Rosé, three identifying wines of a microzone linked to the Via Francia, where the Baglio di Pianetto winery is located. ViaFrancia Wines represent the synthesis of the territory whose essence they interpret.
The In Purezza line was created to describe authentic and sincere single-varietal wines, with peculiar gustatory and aromatic characteristics dictated by the terroir. It consists of white wines such as Grillo, Viognier, Inzolia and Catarratto, and red wines such as Nero d'Avola, Syrah and Frappato. In addition to the oenologist Lo Iacono, Graziana Grassini collaborates on this line with the aim of reinterpreting and enhancing the wine production of this mountain area to tell the story of a Sicily waiting to be discovered.
The Etna line includes two wines, Fermata 125 Rosso and Fermata 125 Bianco, a Nerello Mascalese and a pure Carricante. Two native Etna wines with a unique character and great aging potential thanks to the altitude and its mountain terroir.
Finally, the bubbly wine of Baglio di Pianetto with Murriali and Fushà could not be missing, respectively a sparkling white and a Charmat method sparkling wine.
